Band Parents,
I hope I am not overwhelming you with information. There
is much planning and information to disperse at the
beginning of each school year. Please find attached &
copied below, information for the All-West TN Jr. High
Band auditions and the West TN School Band and Orchestra
Association (WTSBOA) Solo & Ensemble Festival. Hard
copies are coming home today & tomorrow too. All-West
auditions are strongly encouraged for 2nd & 3rd year
students and advanced beginners. Solo & Ensemble is a
required event for all. I wanted you to have this
information well in advance for your planning. Please
visit shadowlawnband.org daily for additional
information.
Thanks,
Dr. C.
ALL-WEST TN JR. HIGH BAND AUDITIONS
Sat., Dec. 13, 2008
University School
232 McClellan Road
Jackson, TN 38305
School Phone # 731-664-0812
ALL-WEST TN BAND CLINIC
Thurs.- Sat., Jan. 29-31, 2008
Cannon Center for the Performing Arts
Memphis, TN
The All-West TN Jr. Band auditions are a regional
(West TN) audition for instrumental music students grades
9 and below. Students will be auditioning for positions
in one of 3 bands (Gold Band, Red Band or Blue Band)
performing at the All-West Clinic (Thurs.- Sat., Jan.
29-31, 09) The auditions are held on Sat., Dec. 13, 2008,
at University School Jackson, TN. Parents provide
transportation to and from the audition. Students are
assigned a specific time (Beginning at 8:00AM - 6:30PM) to
perform through a random computer program. Once the
audition is complete, students may leave. Plan for about
an hour at the audition site.
Each student will audition by performing a prepared
piece of music (percussion will have 3 pieces one for
snare, xylophone and timpani), and 3 of the 12 major
scales plus the chromatic scale (all scales are from
memory). Students do not know ahead of time which 3
scales they will be asked so learning all 12 scales is
required. The third part of the audition is sight
reading. Percussionist will sight read on snare,
xylophone and timpani.
This is a blind audition. The judge will be sitting
behind a screen and not see the student or hear the
student speak. A monitor takes the student into the
judge’s room and leads the student through the audition
process. Parents are not allowed in the judges room. Once
the student has performed, he/she may leave. The results
will be posted on shadowlawnband.org and WTSBOA.com
The students earning positions in one of the 3 bands
will participate in the All-West TN Band Clinic
(Thurs.-Sat., Jan. 29-31, 09) held at The Cannon Center
for the Performing Arts. The clinic fee, hotel costs &
one dinner are included in your SMS Band fees. Due to the
strenuous rehearsal schedule, the students and director
will stay in a downtown hotel close to the Cannon Center.
Rehearsal schedules will be available two weeks prior to
the event. The hotels will be in walking distance to the
rehearsal and performance areas.
At the Clinic our students, together will other
students from all over West TN, will form 3 bands. The
students will rehearse (under the direction of special
clinicians) Thurs. evening, all day Friday and Sat.
morning. Saturday, starting at 8:00AM, the Junior High
Bands will each present a concert starting with the Gold
Band and concluding with the Blue Band. Parents, family
and friends should attend this special event! It is a
very proud moment to see your son/daughter (and my
student) performing on stage in an SMS Band uniform in a
120 piece concert band! Each student receives an
All-West patch at the conclusion of the Blue Band Concert.
Parents may pick up your son/daughter after the
conclusion of the Jr. High Blue Band Concert.
Every student I have taken to the All-West Clinic
LOVES the experience! Parents will be amazed at the
musical growth this weekend will provide. This is an
excellent opportunity for students to excel as individuals
in a regional competition. This also is the first step to
earning college band scholarships. College professors are
given rosters of students earning positions in the
All-West Bands and eagerly seek them out for scholarships.
Ninth Grade students have the option of auditioning for
either the All-West Jr. or Sr. High Bands - but not both.
Starting in the tenth grade, students may audition for the
All-West TN Sr. High Bands and the All-West TN Wind
Ensemble which also meet during the All-West Clinic
weekend. The highest scoring senior high students will
also earn positions in the TN All-State Band which is held
in Nashville, TN during the Tennessee Music Educators
Association Conference. I ENCOURAGE all second year band
students and beyond to audition!
Beginning in September, instructors and I will be
available after school to help students interested in
audition for the All-West Jr. Bands. Please check the SMS
Band Calendar for days when groups of instruments
practice. Private lessons are also very beneficial for
All-West preparation. Please see me for private lesson
information.
West TN School Band and Orchestra Association
Solo & Ensemble Festival
Saturday, April 4, 09
Cordova Middle School
900 Sanga Road
Cordova, TN 38018
The West TN School Band and Orchestra Association
(WTSBOA) Solo & Ensemble Festival is a regional
instrumental music event of about 2500 participating
students. The WTSBOA Solo & Ensemble Festival is not a
competition. The Festival is designed for students to
experience individual achievement by performing a solo or
in a small ensemble (duet, trio, quartet) and receive
feedback in the form of written judge's comments and a
rating. The students will receive the comments and medals
(if earned) in class the week following the event. The
ratings are as follows:
I = Superior (Blue Medal) II = Excellent (Red Medal)
III = Good IV = Fair V =Poor
The judge knows the experience level of each student.
For example: Sixth Grade Band students will be expected
to perform like a "well-prepared" beginning band student.
This is not an all day event. Shadowlawn will be
assigned a time block for our solos & ensembles to be
performed. I will send this information home at least a
week prior to the festival. Parents provide
transportation for this event.
Here are some guidelines:
*You will need a portable CD player for your solos.
Sharing a CD player is fine.
*Take your instrument, music (everything you need to
perform) home with your Friday, April 3! I will not have
access to enter Shadowlawn on April 4. Each percussion
student is responsible for taking all mallets, sticks,
snare drums (what ever you need to perform) to this event
and RETURNING IT SAFELY TO THE SMS BANDROOM (if borrowed
from SMS)
*Parents may not accompany students inside the judge's
room.
* Appearance is part of your score. Students will wear
the green polo-style 08-09 Band shirt with khaki pants
(khaki pants or khaki skirts for girls)
*You MUST HAVE A COPY OF YOUR MUSIC FOR THE JUDGE! Copiers
will not be available on site that day. Each individual
measure of your (and the judge's) music MUST BE NUMBERED.
*Arrive a minimum of 25 minutes prior to your performance
time. I recommend warming up at home or in the car and
leave instrument cases in the car.
*No playing inside the building except in the judge's room
or the warm-up room(s).
* When entering Cordova Middle, signs will guide you to
the judges room. Each room and hallway will be labeled
with Judges' numbers.
*After locating the judge's room, sign in with the monitor
outside of the room. Tell the monitor your name and
assigned time.
*Once inside the judge's room, tell the judge your name as
you are handing her/him your music. You may play a long
tone (and tune for ensembles) before beginning. You may
sit or stand to perform (exception percussion)
*After playing, wait for the judge to give you some short
comments or suggestions. Answer politely if asked a
question. The judge will indicate when you are to exit
the room.
*You may perform with music. Memorization is not required
or expected. Performing well with good stage presence is
what counts.
*I will be at the Festival while our students are
performing.

Band Parents,
Please find attached & copied below, a Marching Band Commitment Form.
I must have this parent & student signed form returned tomorrow, Wed.
Aug. 20. Hard copies are coming home today too. The music will be
easy enough for beginners so these students are welcome too. I must
make decisions now concerning performances & rehearsals for this entire
year. A successful Marching Band experience means that we must have
enough brass, woodwinds, flags & percussion so every student is
important! I learned last evening that our flag instructor can only
come to SMS on Friday afternoons. Please return this tomorrow Thursday
is too late.

Welcome returning and new Band Parents!
The new school year is quickly approaching. I hope everyone is
still enjoying a great Summer. This is my last day of vacation
as I will be teaching camp @ Bolton HS for the next two weeks
prior to teacher in-service week & registration. The Shadowlawn
Band will have lots of rehearsals, performances, contests....
all of the wonderful opportunities Band offers for your child
this year. I’ll be sending information & reminders frequently
this year. Your child will also receive monthly Band Calendars
+ lots of hard copy information. Please check those back packs
daily!
I am really looking forward to this school year. I appreciate your
trust and support.
Dr. C.
The SMS Band Boosters need your help during the Tuesday, Aug. 5
registration. We need parent volunteers to work the Band Booster
table @ Shadowlawn 7:30AM - 12:00pm and 4:00pm - 7:00pm.
Please contact Jennifer Sutton, SMS Band Booster President,
at: mikenjen@bellsouth.net to volunteer. You are needed! Any
amount of time you can offer is welcomed!

Dear Band Parents,
Thanks so much for the JC Penny Gift Card! I will definitely
put this to good use! I appreciate your thoughtfulness.
Thanks so everyone who helped with our banquet! It was
beautifully decorated, the food was awesome, lots of awards /
recognitions – a great event!
As we wrap up this year, please encourage your child to remain
in Band and review / practice this Summer. Middle school kids
cannot see past tomorrow much less next year or high school.
Children need parents to make the big decisions. Middle
schoolers are just children in big bodies. Students will get
out of Band exactly what they put into it – so next year is
another opportunity for all to improve, learn & achieve. Every
child has the opportunity to achieve his or her highest
potentials in instrumental music. Band is a family of friends
and an atmosphere of learning, high standards and achievement.
If you have checked out a school owned instrument, I must hear
from you by Thursday, May 22, of this week. You will need to
either:
Turn in the instrument with $30.00 for it to be checked &
readied for the next student; I will be @ SMS late every
afternoon this week except Tuesday.
Sign, complete & return a Summer 08 check out form (just have
your child to ask for one)
I will continue to use this email group for information this
Summer. If you will not be returning to 08-09 SMS Band, please
email me at your earliest convenience and I will remove your
address.
Again, thanks so much for a wonderful year! I appreciate each
parent & student. I hope you all have a safe, happy Summer!

Dear Band Parents,
We still have some band fees that have not been paid. Our Treasurer
needs this money ASAP to be able to close out this year’s financial
books. We need all parents to honor the commitment they made at
the beginning of this school year when they signed up their child
for band. If you are unsure if your child’s fees are paid in full,
please contact our Treasurer, Pat Pritchard either by email

Thanks!

Our Annual Awards Banquet is tomorrow evening, May 15,
6:30pm at New Hope Christian Church (Kirby Whitten /
Yale Rd.). It is across the street from our concert
site – Bartlett Baptist. Banquet tickets are going
home today.
Please monitor your child’s attire & behavior tomorrow
evening. This is a nice ceremony & semi-formal banquet.
Dress is: nice pants, shirts with a collar (tucked in
pants) for gentlemen (and students) and nice pants,
dress or skirts for ladies (and students). We will have
several VIP guests in attendance – so appearance &
behavior is even more important! The focus tomorrow
evening should positive: SMS Band students’
achievements & accomplishments this year. Please do
not allow inappropriate dress or behavior to detract
from the Band students’ opportunity to be recognized &
enjoy this event! Come hungry, bring your cameras &
enjoy!

may check out the instrument over the Summer. Please ask me
for a Summer Check out Form.
For those students who will not be returning to 08-09 SMS
Band: You’ll need to have your instrument checked by Amro
or Mid South Music & pay for needed repairs. This means the
valves & valve cases and the corks (spit valves) and pads
are in good working condition....the instrument will play in
the same condition you received it. Please bring a repair
verification form (or form from Amro or Mid South Music
stating that the instrument was checked) with your instrument

Friday, May 9, is our final fund-raiser for this school year.
We really need this fund raiser to be a financial success to
fund our banquet & concert!
Here are some ways you can help. The Band Boosters would
very much appreciate donations to sell as concessions and
decorations for the May 9 School-wide Dance. Here are needed
items. You may send these in to the Band Room starting today!
1. Individual size soft drinks in plastic re-sealable bottles
– Coke, Sprite & Dr. Pepper No soft drinks in a can or
generic drinks please
2. Sour Candy (a large box from Sams or Costco) – Nerds,
Airheads, Sour Worms....etc. Sour candy sells well!
3. Ring Pops (a large box from Sams or Costco)– the lollipop
type rings any flavor is OK
4. Glow Earrings – the magnetic type for the ears...this
really sells well too!
5. Door prizes!!! Gift Cards for meals, vouchers for bowling
games, Putt-Putt...etc. Food & entertainment vouchers are
desperately needed! Company donations are welcome!
6. Spring decorations – Flowers, Streamers...anything that we

PLEASE CONTACT OUR LOCAL STATE REPRESENTATIVES REGARDING -
PENDING SPECIAL SCHOOL DISTRICT LEGISLATION
On Tuesday, April 8th, The Education Committee for the Tennessee
House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on legislation
that will give school systems the OPTION of becoming a “SPECIAL
SCHOOL DISTRICT.” This is one of the most important pieces of
educational legislation ever to be considered in our state. The
Tennessee Education Association, The Tennessee School Boards
Association, and The Tennessee Organization of School
Superintendents have all come out in support of special school
district legislation. Please contact our local state
representatives listed below as soon as possible to encourage
them to support the passage of this bill.
Why should Special School District Legislation be Considered in
Tennessee?
•Tennessee is ranked 45th in the nation in K-12 funding.
•The majority of school systems in the nation are special/
independent for a reason - it generates more funding for
education.
• The Special School District bill would provide School Boards
the opportunity to raise funds, which would be earmarked solely
for the system they represent.
•Money earmarked for education can’t be siphoned off for other
city/county projects.
•Local taxpayers are much more supportive of decisions to raise
funds when revenue goes solely and directly to education.
•If special school district legislation were passed in TN it
would merely give existing school systems in the state the OPTION
to become a special school district. While a financially sound
system might not want to consider it now, it could be a valuable
option to have available for the future.
•With the bulk of funding coming from state and local governments,
which elected officials want to take credit for TN being ranked
45th in the nation?
•State legislators, county commissioners, and city council members
have multiple fiscal responsibilities - Why not allow school
boards some limited autonomy in funding like most states and the
majority of the school boards in the nation? After all, they have
the responsibility to oversee K-12 education.
•Tennessee already has 14 special districts established prior to
the 1982 moratorium on the creation of new school districts. Some
individuals have expressed concern over checks and balances
regarding funding. (In reality the checks would come from voters
who elect school board members as well as the TN legislature which
currently must approve revenue increases by the existing 14 special

Dear Band Parents,
All Beginning Band Students have “Melody” to learn & perform at
the WTSBOA Solo & Ensemble Festival Sat. April 12.....remember
our performance slot is 9:00-10:00AM – I strongly suggest
performing @ 9:00AM. Please remind your child to bring his/her
instrument, music, mouthpiece...etc. Home Friday, April 11!
Baritone & Tuba students will need to use the instruments
checked out for at home practice.
All Beginning Band Students have a CD (recorded for their
instrument) to use as a practice tool and accompaniment at the
festival. Please remember to bring your CD player, judge’s copy
of the music & adjudication sheet to the festival.
Trombone students – I have re-copied their CDs. I will
distribute these late today or Tuesday in class. Honestly, they
can use the CDs that they have (the music in in the same key) but
I would like for them to hear a trombone sound for practicing.
Beginning Band students are given opportunities in class (this
week & the next two weeks) to play off the 4 memorized scales that
are part of the requirements for the Outstanding Musician Award
presented @ the May 15 Banquet. The scales are not required for a
grade, but are part of the requirements for that particular award.
Please go to shadowlawnband.org if you need another copy of the
07-08 SMS Band Handbook.....the award information is on the last
two pages. All students have received a hard copy.
Again, thanks so much for your continued support! All Beginner
Band students are nervous over their first Solo & Ensemble
experience. It’s OK – the judge knows the experience level of
each student. They will learn so much from this experience & feel
a real sense of accomplishment on a performance well done! Next
year they will look forward to going to the S & E Festival.

The performance time for Shadowlawn is 9:00-10:00AM Saturday,
April 12, @ the West TN School Band and Orchestra Association
(WTSBOA) Solo & Ensemble Festival held at Cordova Middle School.
I strongly encourage you to arrive early & be prepared to
perform by 9:00AM. The longer this event goes, the more crowded
and the longer the wait time. Please remember this is a required
event for all SMS Band students. Your child will greatly
benefit & grow as a young musician through this experience.
Perform and leave – do not wait around for results. I will
distribute judges sheets and Blue Medals (I = Superior Ratings)
and Red Medals (II = Excellent Ratings) the following week in
class.
All students have either a solo or an ensemble (or both for older
students) to perform at the event. A CD player is required for
all solos – to the play the accompaniment part while the performer
plays the solo.
For the students participating in the Honor Band Percussion
Ensemble – we will arrange to bring the large instruments;
Students will be asked to bring the smaller accessories.
Please remember to check shadowlawnband.org often

to this email) information:
West TN School Band and Orchestra Association
Solo & Ensemble Festival
Saturday, April 12, 2008
Cordova Middle School
900 N Sanga Road
Cordova, TN 38018
The West TN School Band and Orchestra Association (WTSBOA) Solo
& Ensemble Festival is a regional instrumental music event of
about 2500 participating students. The WTSBOA Solo & Ensemble
Festival is not a competition. The Festival is designed for
students to experience individual achievement by performing a
solo or in a small ensemble (duet, trio, quartet) and receive
feedback in the form of written judge's comments and a rating.
The students will receive the comments and medals (if earned) in
class the week following the event. The ratings are as follows:
I = Superior (Blue Medal)
II = Excellent (Red Medal)
III = Good IV = Fair
V =Poor
The judge knows the experience level of each student. For
example: Sixth Grade Band students will be expected to perform
like a "well-prepared" beginning band student.
This is not an all day event. Shadowlawn will be assigned a time
block for our solos & ensembles to be performed. I will send
this information home at least a week prior to the festival.
Parents provide transportation for this event.
Here are some guidelines:
*Take your instrument, music (everything you need to perform)
home with your Friday, April 11! I will not have access to enter
Shadowlawn on April 12. Each percussion student is responsible
for taking all mallets, sticks, snare drums (what ever you need
to perform) to this event and RETURNING IT SAFELY TO THE SMS
BANDROOM (if borrowed from SMS)
*Parents may not accompany students inside the judge's room.
* Appearance is part of your score. Students will wear the black
polo-style 07-08 Band shirt with khaki pants (khaki pants or khaki
skirts for girls)
*You MUST HAVE A COPY OF YOUR MUSIC FOR THE JUDGE! Copiers will
not be available on site that day. Each individual measure of
your (and the judge's) music MUST BE NUMBERED.
*Arrive a minimum of 25 minutes prior to your performance time.
I recommend warming up at home or in the car and leave instrument
cases in the car.
*No playing inside the building except in the judge's room or the
warm-up room(s).
* When entering Cordova Middle, signs will guide you to the judges
room. Each room and hallway will be labeled with Judges' numbers.
*After locating the judge's room, sign in with the monitor outside
of the room. Tell the monitor your name and assigned time.
*Once inside the judge's room, tell the judge your name as you are
handing her/him your music. You may play a long tone (and tune for
ensembles) before beginning. You may sit or stand to perform
(exception percussion)
*After playing, wait for the judge to give you some short comments
or suggestions. Answer politely if asked a question. The judge
will indicate when you are to exit the room.
*You may perform with music. Memorization is not required or
expected. Performing well with good stage presence is what counts.
*I will be at the Festival while our students are performing.

From: Pat Pritchard, popritchard@comcast.net
Subject: fees
I’ve been looking at the numbers and we still have over $5000
not paid in trip fees and almost $2000 outstanding in band
fees, plus some for fundraiser donations not paid. We really
need that money to be able to pay the hotel bill, bus company
and then all of the end of the year stuff. Right now we have
app. $7000 in checking. We owe Destiny $4800 (I think), hotel
around $2000. I still need to pay New Hope (Banquet) and
Bartlett Baptist.
“We make commitments at the beginning of each school year based
on the amount of money we should bring in for annual band fees
and fundraising efforts. In order to be able to fully pay for
all of our expenditures this year, without having to dip into
our savings account (which is money set aside for major
instrument purchases or uniforms), we must have all outstanding
band fees, fundraiser donations and Honor Band trip fees (last
payment is due April 1st) paid as soon as possible.
We still have over $7000 in outstanding fees that need to be
paid. The band is a non-profit organization – we spend most of
what is brought in each year, with a small cushion for each
year’s start-up fees. We need each parent to honor their
commitment and pay their fees in full.”

All of our students will be participating in the
Saturday, April 12, West TN School Band and Orchestra

$7.00 fee for one event was paid for in your band fees.

one event – their solo, so these students do not owe
additional $$. 95% of the 2nd & 3rd year band students
are participating in 2 (a few are performing in 3)
events. Please send the extra $7.00 per event ASAP.
Make checks payable to the Shadowlawn Band Boosters.

generous offers made by band parents to take van loads of
students back to SMS are not possible. Only bus companies
that list SCS on their insurance can transport groups of SCS

West TN School Band and Orchestra Association
Solo & Ensemble Festival
Saturday, April 12, 2008
Cordova Middle School
900 Sanga Road
Cordova, TN 38018
The West TN School Band and Orchestra Association (WTSBOA) Solo /
Ensemble Festival is a regional instrumental music event of about
2500 participating students. The WTSBOA Solo & Ensemble Festival
is not a competition. The Festival is designed for students to
experience individual achievement by performing a solo or in a
small ensemble (duet, trio, quartet) and receive feedback in the
form of written judge's comments and a rating. The students will
receive the comments and medals (if earned) in class the week
following the event. The ratings are as follows:
I = Superior (Blue Medal) II =Excellent (Red Medal)
III= Good IV = Fair V =Poor
The judge knows the experience level of each student. For example:
Sixth Grade Band students will be expected to perform like a
"well-prepared" beginning band student.
This is not an all day event. Shadowlawn will be assigned a time
block for our solos & ensembles to be performed. This is a
required event. I will send this information home at least a week
prior to the festival. Parents provide transportation for this
event.
Here are some guidelines:
*Take your instrument, music (everything you need to perform) home
with your Friday, April 11! I will not have access to enter
Shadowlawn on April 12. Each percussion student is responsible
for taking all mallets, sticks, snare drum (what ever you need to
perform) to this event and RETURNING IT SAFELY TO THE SMS BANDROOM
(if borrowed from SMS)
*Parents may not accompany students inside the judge's room.
* Appearance is part of your score. Students will wear the black
polo-style 07-08 Band shirt (tucked in) with khaki pants (khaki
pants or khaki skirts for girls)
You may play a long tone (and tune
for ensembles) before beginning. You may sit or stand to perform
(exception percussion)
*After playing, wait for the judge to give you some short comments
or suggestions. Answer politely if asked a question. The judge
will indicate when you are to exit the room.
*You may perform with music. Memorization is not required or
expected. Performing well with good stage presence is what counts.
*I will be at the Festival while our students are performing.

Honor Band rehearsal is cancelled this afternoon. If
you have any specific instructions for the students,
please email me ASAP & I will get the message to them.
The director in me wants to rehearse, but the logical
decision is to be safe.

Dear Parents/Guardians,
Please plan on attending the Bolton High School Parent Open

The following topics will be discussed to make the transition
between middle school and high school:

the four (4) year plan
· Communication tools in place that keep you informed
· Extra-curricular events and organizations
· Important people who can assist you in the transition
The schedule of events is the following:
1. General informational meeting in the auditorium (Stagelight
Theatre)
2. Extra-curricular/Organizational overview in the cafeteria-
3. Questions and Answers with Principal Stephens in the library
4. The school will be open until 7:45 for those parents/students
who want to take an informal tour.
Note: Alpha range: A-H will begin in the auditorium; I-R will
begin in the cafeteria; and S-Z will begin in the library.
Each session will last about 20 minutes and then rotations will
occur.
We look forward to working with you and your child as we make
